Faced with the growing impact of tourism on cities and regulatory restrictions, Airbnb has the opportunity to reinvent itself and lead a more sustainable model. GreenStay is a feature that encourages dispersed tourism by suggesting alternative, less crowded destinations and rewarding travellers who recommend new locations.
With this approach, Airbnb not only enhances its reputation, but also contributes to a more balanced and responsible tourism.

Probably yes, at least as we know it today. In a context of increasing regulatory pressure and concerns about the impact of tourism on cities, Airbnb faces a key challenge: adapting to a more sustainable model that benefits both travellers and host communities.
Restrictions imposed in cities such as Paris, Barcelona and New York have limited its presence and affected its reputation. Although the platform has implemented some responsible tourism initiatives, these have been insufficient to make a real impact, but in every challenge there is an opportunity. However, in every challenge there is an opportunity: can Airbnb lead the transition towards a more sustainable and balanced tourism?

GreenStay is a new feature integrated into Airbnb's platform that aims to reduce tourist overcrowding and encourage the exploration of less crowded destinations.
When a user tries to book in a high-demand area, the app suggests nearby alternatives, recommended by other travellers who have explored less saturated areas. In addition, to encourage participation, users can share their own recommendations and receive discounts on future bookings, adding a social layer to the platform.
After analysing the results of the Design Sprint, we confirmed that the proposal is viable and has the potential to become a reality within the Airbnb ecosystem. With GreenStay, the platform can not only mitigate the effects of uncontrolled tourism, but also position itself as a benchmark in sustainable tourism.
