And neither does the future of new technologies. The advancement of the world of computing and Artificial Intelligence is fostering the creation of new professions that we could never have imagined. With the start of the new university year, we are obliged to highlight one piece of data: the 65% for students they will practise professions that do not yet exist, according to several experts. Most of these jobs will have to do with the famous STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

To this day, of the more than 500 university degrees offered in Spain, only a few have the honour of being considered “full employment” And the majority, again, have to do with STEM disciplines. One of these is computer engineering, which, in fact, is seeing a decreasing number of students, despite the fact that job offers are on the rise.

But why is this the case? If young people are actually looking to pursue careers that have a “future”, why are we increasingly finding a lower number of students in computer science classrooms?

On many occasions, this has to do with the high expectations with which they start university. Many expected to be sitting in front of the computer from the first day of class and to be, in less than a year, authentic hackers. As explained in this Xataka article, the training itinerary for the first year of the course consists of a large dose of mathematics and theory about computers, systems and information technologies, physical foundations… The result of this first year of the course? Close to 25% of pupils drop out.

Furthermore, due to the speed at which new technologies and computing paradigms are advancing, it is necessary to be continuously updated. Keeping up with the latest developments is the duty of a good IT professional. This causes university curricula to be outdated, and when the student enters the workforce, they have to face problems that they find difficult to solve. It is here that frustration and disappointment, in many cases, come to the fore. The uncertainty, of not knowing if they will be able to cope with the tasks, due to not being familiar with the new technologies and market tools, is real.

However, this frustration is sometimes even necessary. From these kinds of situations, many students emerge more motivated and strengthened, realising that they must continue learning every day. Most discover that they need to maintain an active role during their training and accept that they will have to make a million mistakes until they find the solution they were looking for. The objective? To gain experience to be able to face these kinds of problems in the real world.

Little by little, alternatives to university education are beginning to be developed, where educational programmes can be updated and designed based on actual market needs. IMMUNE Institute It is based on five pillars, among which practical learning, diversity and collaboration stand out. Thanks to this, students are solving programming challenges from minute one, just as they will tomorrow as professionals, where objectives will be set for them, just as is done at Immune. Furthermore, collaborative learning fosters cooperation among students, resulting in the development of better ideas that will build a better future.

Dreams have no limits.
