Do you know what Radia Joy Perlman discovered? If the answer is no, don't worry, but it's worth keeping them in mind in your daily life. These two women created two tools that you are undoubtedly using to read these lines. The first was the co-inventor of WiFi. The second created the STP protocol, a language used to enable communication between computers. There are many women who have played a very important role in the technology industry and have been overlooked. Unlike their male colleagues, who have not experienced the same. You do know who Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Jeff Bezos are, don't you?

Theorists claim that the differences between men and women in technology are greater the more egalitarian a country is. This theory is maintained by Stoet and Geary in their study “The Gender-Equality Paradox in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education”. In it, they also state that men may not be the best at science, but they are better at it. For their part, women are better at reading. Based on this data, we are faced with a striking obviousness: we tend to like what we are better at more.

On the other hand, if there are currently more educational opportunities being given to women to promote their role in the world of science and technology, why are there fewer and fewer women? Are the policies of feminisation of science not working?

Despite many efforts being made, it appears this gap is a fundamental issue. Carmen Jarén, Vice-Rector for Studies at the Public University of Navarre, asserts that “education and public opinion have tended to consider these fields as masculine and lacking social impact.” Jarén also emphasises that women tend to opt more for degrees such as teaching or nursing, “which are related to care and have a clearer social purpose.” Whatever the case may be, society needs to get its act together regarding education and integrate women into these types of careers. Otherwise, the technological gap will be superimposed on the gender gap.

If we delve into the “tech” sector in Spain, we can see how the female presence increases year by year. While in most companies women hold secondary positions, in the matter of innovation and technology it is another story. The majority of senior management positions in this type of company are held by women. Teresa Acha-Orbea, general manager of Wiko Iberia, emphasises that in Spain, “despite not being close to the desired level of equality”, it is one of the European countries where there is greater equality and respect for women.

The experts make it clear that the presence of women in technology is key to a more egalitarian future. “The world to come is technological, if women are not part of it, others will be designing the world,” assures the Professor of Computer Science and president of the Spanish Association of Artificial Intelligence.

The advantages of including women in this field are not limited to terms of equality. Regarding profitability, the European Commission estimates that digital industrial parity would increase the GDP of the European Union. To be precise, it would do so by approximately 9 billion euros annually. In Spain, our GDP in 2025 would be 110 billion euros higher. The condition, according to Helena Herrero, president of HP for Spain and Portugal, is that the female employment rates of the most advanced European countries are achieved.

Does the name Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler ring a bell?
